Why Are They Falling Away? – Part 2

2 Timothy 3:1-7 “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God– having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. “

Psalm 119:105 “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path”

I started this series earlier this morning about Christians (especially young people – high school, college age and just out of college) falling away from the Truth.  I spoke about the burden on my heart for people in this age range, but I am beginning to see now that is not just for this age but a burden for the Truth to be shared and taught.  I grew up in a strong Christian family where we went to church every Sunday, read our Bible every day (as a family and were encouraged to do it on our own too) and memorized lots of Scriptures.  I was taught about the Sovereignty of God, the importance of being rooted and grounded in God’s Word and the power of prayer.  We also had drilled into us the importance of having a firm foundation, building our lives on the Rock and learning to set priorities (God, family, then all else follows).  I am so thankful for my upbringing (and the prayers of my parents), because I  KNOW they helped shape me into who I am today and help me stand firm in the truth!

Sadly I have seen and heard of many young people who were raised in strong Christian families and have bought into the lies of Satan and are struggling to see what the Truth really is.  What are the lies that they are falling for and why are they appealing to our youth and young believers?  What is drawing them to sink their teeth into the lie and live according to it rather then the Truth?

Here are some of the most common lies that I have heard, been told or see people (who proclaim to be Christians) believing.  I know there are more, but these are enough to make me cry.

  • * It is OK to NOT go to church.  After all it is a personal relationship.
  • * The bible is NOT relevant for us today.  It is for and about people of a specific time and was meant for them.
  • * The Bible is NOT the Word of God.  It was written by fallen man and therefor it is just a collection of their opinions and biases, not God speaking to us.
  • * Prayer does NOT work.  It is just mindless chatter to make yourself feel better.
  • * The Holy Spirit is NOT real.  It is just your conscience telling you what is right or wrong.  You know in and of YOURSELF what is right.
  • * Sex before marriage  is OK and a reality of life.  (Sad thing is I have heard some Christian parents talking as if it is just a given and they just want their kids to be smart about it).
  • * It is OK to live with your boyfriend or girlfriend.  After all, you  need to know if you will actually be able to live with them before you make the whole marriage commitment.
  • * Being gay is OK.  Even if you are a Pastor.  It is just the way that some people are born.
  • * Gay marriage is NOT the a problem with the disintegration of marriage , divorce is the real problem.  Gays have a track record for longer and more stable marriages, so it would actually help marriage.
  • * The love of money is NOT a bad thing.  Life is all about doing what is best for me and getting “mine”.  After all, don’t I deserve to be happy and successful and have whatever I want?

Obviously there are many more then these, but these are ones that I seem to being hearing more and more lately.  And the sad thing is, I hear them from professing Christian young people and those who have grown up following Jesus Christ and learning the Truth.  As you can see, a lot of the lies sound convincing and may even sound appealing.  A lot of them are just twisting the Truth a little.  But that little bit of twisting is what makes it a LIE.  And if you believe one lie it is SOOO easy to believe another and another and another.  Pretty soon you have no idea what Truth is any more.

So why are the lies being believed?  Why is it so easy to fool Christians?  First of all I believe that it all goes back to the Bible (the Word of God) and really KNOWING the Truth.  About having a firm foundation so that you can stand firm in temptation, or when Satan comes trying to feed you the twisted truth, or even when life is not going your way and crumbling all around you.

Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Luke 6:47-49 “I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.  But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

Joshua 1:8Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

The Bible warns us of false prophets and teachings coming out of the woodwork in the end times.  About those that will teach what seams to be the truth, but is not.

Matthew 24: 11-13 “Many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,  but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.”

2 Timothy 4:3-4 “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”

What are itchy ears?  Look at the definition from 2 Timothy above.  They are hearing what you want to hear and  looking around to find something or anyone to support what you WANT to believe.  After all, it can’t be bad if it makes sense and makes you feel good, can it?

For instance, do a search on the Internet  or on Facebook about this “The Bible is the Word of God”.  You will get results like this

There is stuff written about any way you want to look at it.  So if you believe that the Bible is God’s Word, you don’t just have to take the Bible’s word for it.  And if you want to believe they Bible isn’t God’s Word there are thousands of sites and pages that supposedly back you up.  After all, its true if it is on the internet or in the news, right?

Besides the internet what are some others issues in our society and time?  There are the teaching and doctrine from so called Christian schools and even churches.   Honestly, it is even a problem at some seminaries (where young men and women are being trained for ministry).  Another thing that are the ego feeding and making us feel good messages from some “Christian” churches.  These messages may seem to have a “slim” basis on Scripture behind them, BUT are meant to and do appeal to people.  It is sad that places where you should be able to hear the Truth you are instead being fed fluff – stunting growth in your walk with Christ.

In short we need a revolution of return to God’s Word as the TRUTH!  We need to learn to take what we hear with a grain of salt and line it up with Scripture.  We can’t believe everything that we hear as truth.  When we start doing that, we become susceptible to half-truths and our itchy ears.  The Word of God is Truth and needs to be treated and taught as such!   I think that lots of young people are afraid to view the Bible as Truth and believe the Truth because it would restrict them and their lives and what they want (notice a lot of selfishness in that verse).  Yes, God defines and lays out ways for us to live, but he does so as a loving Father and for our own good.  As a parent I don’t set rules to hurt/harm my sons.  Instead I set them to keep them safe and because I love them.  What we need to be sharing with our young people and young in Christ is the FREEDOM that comes from following Christ.  From believing in HIS Word and from trusting Him with the details of our life!

John 8:31-32 “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Psalm 119:9-16 “How can a young man keep his way pure?  By living according to your word.  I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.  I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, O LORD; teach me your decrees.  With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.  I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.  I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.”

Psalm 19:7-11 “The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.”
