Why Are They Falling Away? – Part 3

Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart for it is the wellspring of life.”

Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things”

WHAT GOES IN IN WHAT COMES OUT

I am continuing today on the topic that I started last week, on the lies that believers (and non-believers) grab onto and what is causing our young (in Christ and in life) to fall away from the Truth.  Today’s topic revolves around media.  This media is in all forms: books, TV, movies, internet, etc.  A sad think about media today is not just the variety that is available (which is wider then any time before us), but the fact that the morals within the stories, shows and movies have continually degraded.

What is even sadder is that many believers have also degraded their morals by what they are feeding themselves (reading and watching).  I know that I personally struggle with this at times too.   It is so easy to ‘overlook’ the bad parts of tv shows and movies because you get invested in the characters or storylines.  You tell yourself you know what is the truth and watching it won’t harm you.  Even if you don’t want to admit it, it is harming you too.

But think about this in terms of our youth. This of what they have all been exposed to from the time that they start watching TV until now.  The sensationalize of sex, death and gay relationships have suddenly become OK in a way to them.  The promotion of ‘tolerance’ of others beliefs is so preeminent that they fall into believing that if you don’t accept others (AND their faults, sins, and wrong beliefs) YOU are the bad person.  YES, we are to love the sinner, but we are NEVER supposed to love or encourage the sin!

Look at too what the some of the popular book series are  (for both Christians and non-Christians): Twilight series and Harry Potter.   I am not here to start a debate as to why or why not you should or shouldn’t read these.  But line the content up with the Word of God and you will get your answer.  Is what you are reading in these items the Truth or does it in fact degrade your view on what is “true, noble,  right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy”?

When I was young my parents did an extraordinary job of not allowing us to watch ANYTHING that had compromising material in it.  We never had a movie rated over ‘G’ in the house until I was 17.   And even with that, they pre-screened many of the movies they allowed us to see.  When  it came to TV we were allowed 30 minutes of TV a day, and it had a to be a pre-approved show to boot.  As a kid I thought this was TOTALLY unfair.  As a parent I am beginning to see the wisdom of this more and more, especially with the shows/movies that are coming out today.

My parents always told us that what we feed our minds is what we start believing.  They said what you store up in your heart is what is going to come out.  If you are constantly feeding yourself the lies that premarital sex is OK, it is just what is the norm in today’s society, you are going to believe it.  What about the sanctity of life?  Media feeds that life does not begin at conception, but only when you born.  How sad and how many deaths of innocent children this has and continues to bring.

And if you are constantly being shown that gay relationships and lifestyle are totally normal, you will begin to believe it for yourself.  After all, weren’t they just born that way (that is what they tell us anyway).  Or what about how we speak?  If you are surrounded with those who language is vulgar or watching things that have lots of language, it is very easy to fall into that trap too (I know).

These are just a few things, a few issues that are creeping into the church.  You can see the lies that are being bought into by Christians.  And you can see what it is doing to our youth.  Yes, the culture says you are strange if you don’t have sex before marriage and if you think that marriage is just between a man and a woman .  The culture says you are strange and prejudiced if you come down against gays and their lifestyle.  Sad thing is, I see a lot of Christians (both young and old), buying into these lies. And what they are feeding themselves is a BIG reason as to why!

Some of these may seem like little things.  They may seem to be too small to some to worry about.  But consider a burst dam.  It starts out with just the tiniest of cracks.   But the longer the tiny crack leaks, the larger the leak becomes. If you don’t fix the leak when it is small it leads to the devastation of a full on flood.  The flood will wipe away or destroy everything in is path, and it is hard to recover from that.  If you believe just one of Satan’s lies and let down your guard, you are giving him a foothold.  The more and more you are exposed to something, the more and more your defenses are dropped and the more and more you are susceptible to believing that which is untrue.

So what are you feeding yourself?  What are you letting your children view, read or be fed?  Do you need a shift?  I know that I do.  I need to be more diligent in guarding not only what I am viewing myself, but ESPECIALLY what I am allowing my children to view.  We are told in God’s Word to think about “true, noble,  right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy” (Philippians 4:8).
